6 Basic Cleaning and Maintenance Tips for Refrigerators

Your refrigerator is an investment for your home that you hope would last for years to come. To keep your fridge clean and running smoothly, you’ll need to perform regular cleaning and maintenance. We’ve compiled a list of maintenance steps you can take.

1. Clean Deposits From the Drip Pan and the Drain Hole

Refrigerators have a drain hole and a drip pan to aid in removing condensation. Remove food particles and mineral deposits that may have collected in your drain hole as indicated in the owner’s manual. Finish that off by scrubbing the drain pan. That should keep it clean for a while longer before you have to clean it again.

2. Replace the Water Filter

If your refrigerator has an ice maker or a water dispenser, it probably has a water filter that needs regular replacement. You should be changing your filters every few months or according to your owner’s manual. If you don’t replace the filter, you’ll end up with dirty water and ice cubes, which may make you and your family sick. So refer to your owner’s manual for how regularly it should be changed.

3. Set the Correct Temperature

Setting your fridge to the correct temperature is an important practice to lengthen its lifespan. Set it between 37 and 40 degrees and the freezer at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. You may also use an appliance thermometer to check that your refrigerator is set at safe temperature levels. Additionally, you must check it regularly to ensure that the temperature is correct.

4. Examine the Leveling of Your Refrigerator

If your fridge isn’t leveled, it may not close on its own or seal the way it’s supposed to, resulting in energy waste. Put a carpenter’s level on top of the refrigerator, then manually adjust it until it is leveled.

5. Clean the Condenser Coils

A dusty condenser coil can lead your refrigerator to work harder, resulting in a higher energy bill and a shorter refrigerator life expectancy. Prevent that by cleaning the condenser coils with a vacuum or a broom and removing the dust buildup every one to three months. You can find the coils either underneath or behind the fridge. If it’s underneath the refrigerator, you’ll need to remove the frill first.

6. Wipe the Gaskets

The purpose of the gaskets on the fridge and freezer doors is to keep the cold air in and the warm air out. This thing is essential in keeping your fridge working efficiently. Look over the gaskets to spot any cracked or damaged areas. The gaskets should seal as tightly as possible, and you can test this by inserting a piece of paper in the door. If you can pull it without any resistance, that means it doesn’t shut tight. You should replace it as soon as you can.

You should periodically clean your fridge and check for any maintenance issues. If you spot something damaged or needs replacement, you should attend to it immediately to lengthen the life of your refrigerator in your home. You may also refer to your owner’s manual for the recommended maintenance and parts that may need replacement.

If I were to maintain my fridge, I would make sure to replace its compressor so its performance will improve. Well, I also agree with you that it would be smarter to always replace its filters. Thank you for sharing here as well the importance of keeping the refrigerator at a proper temperature level.

My refrigerator is already leaking, and that is why I’ve decided to look for a service that may address the matter before it gets worst. Anyhow, it’s also a good thing that you shared the importance of changing the filters when needed. I’ll keep in mind to regularly clean the system too.
